Top 5 Pinehurst Area Courses

More golf history per square mile than anywhere in the US. These are the courses that define Pinehurst.

1

Pinehurst No. 2

Donald Ross' crown jewel — host of 3 US Opens, the US Women's Open, and the 2024 US Open. The restored wiregrass-and-sand natural areas and infamous domed greens make this the ultimate test. A bucket-list course, period.

Par 72 Slope 144 $350-695/round
2

Pinehurst No. 4

Redesigned by Gil Hanse (architect of the 2016 Olympic course). Wide fairways funnel into demanding green complexes. Many locals consider it the best playing experience at the resort — all the challenge, less pressure than No. 2.

Par 72 Slope 142 $200-395/round
3

Pinehurst No. 8 — The Centennial

Tom Fazio's tribute to the great courses of the Sandhills. Designed to celebrate Pinehurst's 100th anniversary. Rolling terrain, strategic bunkers, and pristine conditioning make it a top-3 resort course.

Par 72 Slope 137 $175-350/round
4

Mid Pines Inn & Golf Club

Donald Ross gem just minutes from the resort. Recently restored to its original 1921 design — a masterclass in strategic golf architecture. Intimate setting with an inn that feels like stepping back in time.

Par 72 Slope 135 $125-250/round
5

Pine Needles Lodge & Golf Club

Another Donald Ross treasure and host of three US Women's Opens. The longleaf pines frame every hole beautifully. Excellent lodging packages make it a strong alternative base for your Pinehurst trip.

Par 71 Slope 135 $125-275/round

US Open History at Pinehurst

Pinehurst No. 2 has hosted the US Open in 1999 (Payne Stewart's iconic fist pump on 18), 2005 (Michael Campbell), 2014 (Martin Kaymer's wire-to-wire), and 2024 — making it one of only a handful of venues to host multiple US Opens. Walking the same fairways as champions adds a layer of gravity to every shot. The Payne Stewart statue outside the clubhouse is a pilgrimage for golf fans.
